Cougars come up short against Monroe

The Monroe Redhawks had to count on the defense when they opened their defense of the Rocky River Conference championship with a rocky 16-10 victory over Central Academy on Friday. The Redhawks (4-3, 1-0 RRC) ended a three-game skid but it wasn’t in the impressive fashion they were wanting for homecoming. Central Academy (3-4, 0-1 RRC) scored 10 points in a span of 4:02 in the fourth quarter. The Cougars got on the board when Monroe’s long snapper hiked the ball over the punter’s head and through the end zone for a safety. CATA reached the end zone soon after on Jack Heda’s 59-yard touchdown run. QB Clemson Allen passed to Quay Threatt for the two-point conversion with 3:47 left, pulling the Cougars to within 16-10. The Cougars got the ball back with 2:19 left but after picking up a first down the Redhawks’ defense stopped Heda just a couple of chain links short of the first down on fourth and two, sealing the victory.
